Evaluation of the Shear Resistance of Stone Columns Using Construction Demolition Waste
摘要
Despite some studies on reusing construction and demolition waste (CDW), its application in geotechnical engineering has not yet been explored extensively. The present research work aims to conduct a comprehensive study on the potential uses of recycled construction and demolition waste in stone columns. Using CDW in stone columns as a backfill material can be a sustainable and effective disposal method. In that case, the shear strength of the soil reinforced with CDW would be an essential parameter in evaluating stone column performance. With this in view, direct shear tests were conducted on soil reinforced with stone columns made of conventional aggregate, which were replaced partially to fully with CDW. The effect of area ratio on the shear strength parameters was evaluated by considering three different area ratios. Moreover, the same area ratio but with different numbers and the layout of stone columns are considered in this study. The results showed that the stone columns made with CDW achieves up to 78% improvement its peak strength compared to the natural basalt aggregate (NBA) stone column. The CDW stone column with a triangular pattern achieved the maximum shear strength among all configurations. Also, it showed superior performance than the NBA single stone column with 6% higher in peak shear strength. The test results showed that the CDW stone column in triangular pattern can be used effectively over an NBA single stone column of equivalent area ration.
