Utilisation of Sand as a Reinforcing Material for Improving the Capacity of Soft Soil

Soil reinforcement is a technique used to enhance the soil’s engineering properties. Several strengthening methods are available to stabilise the problematic soils (soft clay). These approaches include the use of thermal techniques, Portland cement, lime, fly ash, ground freeing, jet grouting, and pre-fabricated vertical drains. Comparably, one of the most widely used methods for enhancing soil is the use of stone columns, which have been applied globally to enhance buildings constructed on soft clay by raising their bearing capacity and reducing differential and total settlements. The vertical draining function of stone columns speeds up consolidation. In this paper, waste sand is used as a column filler material, which can act as a sustainable material and will also address the current environmental concern. Sand utilisation for soil stabilisation can be a cost-effective and environmentally responsible method of extracting solid waste. A numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the behavioural reactions of unreinforced soft clay beds and clay beds reinforced with sand columns. A comparison between the performance of unreinforced and reinforced clay bed was performed by analysing the various parameters utilised in this study.
