Characterization of Mine Overburden Materials for Pavement Applications: A Microstructural and Small-Scale Study

The study investigates the potential utilization of mine overburden (OB) materials from the Umrer Open-Cast Mine near Nagpur, India, for pavement applications. A comprehensive microstructural characterization and laboratory testing analysis was conducted on topsoil, sandstone, and basalt samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques were employed to determine the mineralogical and chemical properties of the samples. Proctor compaction and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests were also performed to assess the geotechnical properties. Results indicated the presence of quartz, feldspar, and other minerals, with basalt showing the highest load-bearing capacity (CBR value of 46.89% unsoaked and 38.22% soaked). Topsoil had the lowest CBR values (5.35% unsoaked, 2.33% soaked), suggesting limited use without stabilization. The study concludes that while all three materials show potential for use in pavement applications, basalt and sandstone are particularly suitable due to their favorable geotechnical properties.
