Enhancing Slope Stability in Old Dump Sites Using Berms with Plaxis 2D Modeling
摘要
As the population increases, waste from industries, homes, and hospitals also escalates. This rise in waste generation poses significant challenges for waste management, especially in developing countries like India. Managing old dump site slope stability is crucial due to limited land availability and high population density. These dump sites are prone to failure from natural and man-made disasters, with rainfall being a significant contributor. Adding berms as a structural mitigation measure has shown potential in improving slope stability. This study uses Plaxis 2D software to analyze the combined effects of berms and rainfall on old dump site stability. The research evaluates various slope ratios, berm configurations, and multilayer covers under induced rainfall conditions. Key findings highlight that berm construction significantly improves the factor of safety (FOS), reducing failure risks by up to 27.9%. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of combining berms with slope engineering to stabilize old dump sites.
