Biochar is a porous, stable, and low-density carbonaceous material produced through thermochemical decomposition of biomass under limited oxygen environment. The present research focuses on the utilization of rice husk biochar (RH). It presents the feedstock sources, preparation, characterization, and amending biochar into soil. The biochar is amended with the soil in a weight ratio of up to 15%. The prepared sample of soil and biochar amended soil (BAS) was evaluated for various geotechnical properties. Results show that the liquid limit (LL), plastic limit (PL), shrinkage limit (SL), pH and optimum moisture content (OMC) increases, and maximum dry density and specific gravity are observed to decrease with increasing the biochar content. Soil and BAS at OMC are prepared for unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and compressibility test. There is insignificant change in UCS values for all percentage of biochar in soil. Microstructural study and phase analysis were carried out for biochar and BAS and correlated with physical and engineering properties.
