Application of Foundry Wastes for Landfill Liners

The solid waste generated by the community and industries is dumped into engineered landfills. Decomposition of waste leads to the formation of many chemicals. These chemicals generated interact with the permeating water and produce a harmful liquid called leachate. When leachate mixes with the surrounding environment, it contaminates the soil and groundwater. Liners are the barrier layers constructed on the sides and bottom of landfills to control soil and groundwater contamination caused by leachate migration into the surrounding environment. Compacted Clay Liners (CCLs) and Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) are the most commonly used for the construction of landfill liners. The availability of natural materials for the construction industry has become a challenge in the recent years. Utilization of waste materials from industry can be a possible solution in view of the scarcity of natural construction materials. Metal casting industries use sand and bentonite to make moulds for the casting process. After repeated number of uses, sand is left as a waste from the casting industries. The growth in metal industries is leading to a huge generation of waste every year. It has become a great difficulty to find areas for dumping industrial wastes. Since foundry wastes have sand and bentonite, the behaviour of foundry wastes is similar to that of the sand-bentonite mixtures. This indicates the possibility of using foundry wastes as a construction material. The utilization of industrial waste for construction works helps in a sustainable future in the construction works and helps to reduce lot of land requirements for dumping the waste. The present study focuses on the utilization of the foundry waste for the construction of landfill liners. Detailed experiments were carried out for evaluating the suitability of foundry waste for the liner material. The experimental results showed that the hydraulic conductivity of the foundry waste after second wetting cycle was 1.61 × 10–9 m/s. The unconfined compressive strength was found to be 404 kPa. The results showed that the foundry waste is suitable for the utilizing it in the construction landfill liners.
