Physical and Geotechnical Properties of Incineration Ash for Effective Utilization as Landfill Cover Material

Incineration disposal facility used for mass reduction volume of municipal solid waste, popular worldwide over the past decades. Disposal and reuse of incineration residues are regulated in most developed nations to minimize their environmental impact. However, incineration residues from Indian Waste treatment plants are being disposed of unregulated in open dumpsites and MSW landfills or low-lying areas. Therefore, efforts are underway in India to effectively utilize incineration ash byproducts. Extensive studies have been conducted on using ash to minimize adverse environmental impacts. However, limited research studies have been reported to improve and recycle MSW incineration ash. This present research study aims to comprehensively find incineration ash’s physical and geotechnical properties and its effective utilization for cover material in landfills. The incineration ash was collected from the incineration unit of the solid waste management disposal site of Nashik City. The Atterberg’s limits, compaction characteristics, hydraulic conductivity, and shear strength parameters were investigated at various percentages of 5, 10, 15, and 20% incineration ash amended with landfill cover soil. Results from experimental investigation show improved engineering characteristics of the soil. Field experts and practitioners can use the findings of the present research study for its application as an alternative waste material used in landfill cover systems as a landfill cover material for its partial replacement.
