The growth of populations and vehicles in urban areas has driven the demands for additional transportation infrastructures. With limited vacant land, interchanges and overpasses have been constructed to improve the transportation network. Considering the construction accessibility and efficiencies, jacked-frame bridge has been the preferred option. After crossing the existing road with a frame bridge, differential settlement will likely be observed at the abutment. As such, it is important to minimise the differential settlement in the transition section between road and bridge. In this paper, a 3D finite element analysis is adopted to evaluate the construction process of a jacked-frame bridge. Differential settlement between the road and bridge transition sections are assessed, particularly after jacking the frame bridge at existing road embankment and the changes in the depth of the pit excavation. Based on the finite element analysis, the obtained horizontal and vertical displacements are examined. As expected, it is observed that the maximum settlements increase with higher embankments. This is a pilot study to explore the suitability using Finite Element analysis to assess the railway embankments with jacked-frame bridge.

摘要
