Agriculture remains a central pillar of Bangladesh’s economy, employing 40% of the nation’s workforce and contributing 11.5% to its GDP. Although agriculture in Bangladesh has traditionally been male-dominated, recent decades have witnessed a growth in female participation, increasing by about 13.6% over the last twenty years. Despite the growing involvement of women, entrenched gender disparities rooted in socio-cultural norms and institutional barriers continue to restrict their influence in decision-making and limit their autonomy in agricultural activities. These challenges highlight the unequal opportunities faced by women in this sector. Although global and regional studies, particularly those focusing on Asia, shed light on the roles of women in various agricultural domains, they often fail to adequately address the dynamics of women’s participation in decision-making at the family level. Against this backdrop, this chapter provides an in-depth introduction to women’s involvement in agriculture, emphasizing their contributions from both international and national perspectives. Moreover, this chapter has made discussion on some core concepts for getting clear understanding of this study.
