The global demand for energy consumption is increasing daily in almost every sector especially in developing nations. Rapid consumption of energy using fossil fuels has led to various health hazards such as respiratory disorders, stroke, and asthma. It also has a devastative effect on climatic conditions due to emission of harmful gases like carbon dioxide which ultimately leads to global warming. Therefore, there is a need to find an alternative to these kinds of non-renewable harmful sources. One such example includes the use of energy produced by green fuels. It not only emits less toxic greenhouse gases but also has other advantages over it such as recyclability, longer burning time, increased shelf life, and ease of transport. An industrial effluent, especially agro-industrial waste has a major role in production of green fuel owing to the fact that the generated waste is a rich source of hydrocarbons. Microbial fermentative processes of carbohydrate rich waste products can produce green fuels such as ethanol and biogas. However, there is a need to increase the production output to meet the ever-increasing demand of energy. This chapter highlights the current status and necessary future aspects for the production of green fuel from industrial and agricultural waste products.
