Performance Evaluation of City Circular Bus Routes of Thiruvananthapuram

The rapid urbanization and economic advancements post-independence have led to an increased demand for travel. The disproportionate growth of travel demand and vehicle population relative to the advancements in road network spearheaded various transportation issues such as congestion, pollution, increased travel time, accidents, and environmental impacts. Public transportation is identified as one of the sustainable modes of transportation which can meet the mobility requirement of the people ensuring social inclusivity. Among the various modes of public transportation, bus transport is identified as the most accessible mode of public transportation having maximum social inclusivity. Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, has introduced city circular bus services for daily commuting inside the city on a hop-on-hop-off manner. The services are operated at a fixed interval in both clockwise and anticlockwise direction. The passengers are expected to board the bus from a stop and then alight at another stop which is repeated until the passenger reaches the desired destination, thus having a few numbers of transfers. This study tries to evaluate the performance of city circular services operating in the city of Thiruvananthapuram based on the route design standards. The route design criteria considered are population density and geographic coverage of the routes. The level of service criteria viz., peak period services, link load, boarding and alighting pattern, and on-board passenger volume pattern are also evaluated.
