Influential Factors Affecting Parker’s Mode Choice Behavior in Kozhikode City

Parking poses a significant challenge for transportation and traffic management on a global scale due to the rapid growth of economies, subsidies, and outdated policies, resulting in increased traffic congestion and pollution in metropolitan areas. The current study aims to pinpoint the key factors that influence commuters’ decisions regarding parking choices in Kozhikode city, located in Kerala. A revealed preference survey was conducted among 1200 customers visiting various land uses to understand the mode choice behavior of parkers. The data collection was done through a user opinion survey, and the data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS software. The multinomial logit model (MNL) was employed to understand individual parker’s preferred modes of transportation. Two-wheeler, car, and public transport modes were considered for the development of the mode choice model in which public transport was chosen as the reference category. The input variables considered for the development of model were socio-demographic variables, travel-related variables, and parking-related variables. The study’s findings identified several key factors influencing parkers’ mode choice behavior, including monthly income, vehicle ownership, purpose of visit, number of people accompanied, parking search time, and parking duration. The parking rate found out from the parking rate model showed there is a higher requirement for parking space than the existing standards. This knowledge will aid in crafting sustainable transportation strategies and effective parking solutions for Kozhikode city.
