Framework for Application of Bamboo-Based Eco-friendly Submerged Vanes for Developing Inland Water Transport in India
摘要
Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) is the most cost-effective and energy efficient mode of transport particularly for logistic purposes. India has a very large network of rivers or other water bodies have a great potential to utilize and develop IWTs but there are several barriers in harnessing this potential. The most critical hurdle is lack of available depth in rivers during lean/non-monsoon period for which dredging can be a solution but as it is a costly affair with substantial potential of disturbing local riverine ecology. An innovative alternative in the form of bamboo based eco-friendly submerged vane can be a potential solution which is cost friendly as well. The paper discusses the proposed developed design and its implementation on National Waterway-1 (river Ganga) in India. Geo-morphological results of field study are also shared with prospects of this innovative approach.
