The Effectiveness of Blended Learning and a Future Vision of Optimal Learning, as Observed from Data Collected from Approximately 3,000 Adults Enrolled in Corporate Language Learning Courses at Japanese Companies
摘要
This paper reports on the findings taken from analysis of various types of data. From 1991 to 2025, we have continually held language learning training courses at a host of corporations within Japan. After transitioning to using digital texts and resources in 2013, we started to implement blended training courses, and continued to collect data from said courses. In this study, we focused primarily on 2,998 students who were mainly enrolled in English training courses. After analysing Communication Ability Evaluation scores (The ‘Communication Ability Evaluation (CAE)’ is an evaluation system developed by Parakaro Corporation, and the ‘Communication Ability Evaluation score’ refers to the result of an evaluation taken using the CAE system.), we found that thanks to e-Hyper, our e-learning system centred on improving conversational ability, high school graduates working in the manufacturing sector were able to raise their communication ability to the starting level of a university graduate after as little as six months of learning (The length of a language training course varies by company, department and purpose; the majority of courses consist of either twenty or forty classes, stretching from six months to just under a year.). This result suggests that high school graduates working in Japanese manufacturing companies may show more improvement in conversational ability than their university graduate peers, possibly due to the fact that a familiarity with written words, complex sentence structures and grammar is not as ingrained into them as it is in university graduates. This paper reports on these findings and explores a future vision for blended learning that can be observed from the analysis results (The data analysed in this particular paper was all gathered by one company, i.e., ourselves. This shows just how difficult it is to gather reliable corporate study data. To our knowledge, there are very few companies carrying out similar activities to a similar depth to ourselves.).
