Designing Aptamers for Cancer Diagnosis Therapy

Aptamer technology is a new and promising area that holds promise for improving cancer treatment and detection. Similar to antibodies, aptamers are single-stranded oligonucleotides or peptides that have high selectivity and affinity for molecular targets. However, they have many benefits over antibodies, including simplicity of synthesis, reduced immunogenicity, and chemical durability. This chapter explores the development, choice, and use of aptamers in the field of cancer. It starts by describing aptamer selection techniques, such as Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX), and then goes into new developments to improve target specificity and therapeutic effectiveness. It investigates how aptamers may be included in diagnostic platforms, including biosensors and imaging systems, highlighting how they can enhance early cancer biomarker identification and real-time monitoring. The chapter also explores the therapeutic uses of aptamers, such as their integration into nanomedicine devices for precision oncology and their function as targeted delivery systems for radionuclides, chemotherapeutics, or gene-editing agents. Emerging remedies, such as chemical alterations and hybrid conjugates, are discussed with problems including in vivo stability and off-target consequences. In order to simulate creative methods to use aptamer technology to revolutionize cancer detection and treatment, this chapter highlights recent developments as well as potential further paths.
