In today’s digital age, the spread of misinformation and disinformation has become a significant issue, fueled by the rise of generative AI, Deepfakes, and advanced editing tools. This has led to a decline in public trust in digital media. Traditional methods of detecting false information are no longer enough, making it crucial to develop strong systems for verifying the authenticity of media. One effective approach is to provide reliable provenance information, which can help ensure the integrity and trustworthiness of digital content. In this paper, we explore the current advancements in media provenance and authenticity verification. We offer a comprehensive overview of the techniques used for tracing the origins of images and videos as well as the latest research in the field. We discuss existing standards, industry solutions, alternative methods, and the technology that supports these efforts. Additionally, the paper examines the challenges and limitations that provenance systems face, such as issues with scalability, privacy, and widespread adoption by platforms. Finally, we identify areas where more research is needed and suggest potential directions for future studies.
