For over a century, the Indian pharmaceutical retail market has been dominated by the unorganized pharmaceutical retail sector, which not only makes essential drugs available to the huge diversified population of India but also provides millions of jobs. Presently, these unorganized pharmacies are facing tremendous challenges in attractive prices and the large variety of products offered by organized and e-pharmacies. The survival of these independent pharmacies is of prime concern in this research. A field survey of Indian unorganized pharmaceutical retailers and customers is carried out in the present study to analyze the influence of organized retail and e-pharmacies on unorganized pharmaceutical retail sectors. According to the study, unorganized retailers in the catchment area of organized retailers suffered a reduction in sales and profit after the entry of organized retailers and e-commerce. The unorganized pharmaceutical retailers away (more than 2 km) from the organized retailers also suffer in sales due to the presence of predatory pricing policy of the organized retailers and e-commerce.

A Descriptive Study on the Growth of Unorganized Independent Pharmaceutical Retail Sector in India
