Accumulation of Arsenic in the Food Chain Through Groundwater Soil Environment System: Its Alleviation Strategies

Arsenic (As) is a common element found initially in the earth’s crust. In nature, arsenic is usually found in other metal ores. It is a heavy metal that exists at low concentrations in soil and groundwater from where it enters the plant body. The groundwater in some states of India has been reported to contain arsenic in much higher levels, ranging from 50 to 3700 μg As/L. The arsenic contamination in groundwater in these regions is thought to be geogenic. The incessant use of unhygienic groundwater for irrigation is one of the chief reasons for the increase in the soil. Various organized studies have been accomplished so far to examine the effect of arsenic in groundwater, used as an irrigation resource, on the soil-plant-human range, but these have been limited. This article has tried to collect arsenic mobilization mechanisms within groundwater and how they affect the food chain through the consumption of food crops and groundwater soil environment systems. Furthermore, different approaches deployed to alleviate arsenic toxicity from the soil are also included in this article.
