Initially, ionic liquids have been come out as an eco-friendly option to the volatile organic solvents with wide choice of the cation and anionic combinations. In the last 20 years, ionic liquids have attracted considerable attention for applications in various advanced scientific fields including catalysis for organic synthesis. Various physico-chemical features, such as wide liquid range, designing of ionic liquid, solvation ability, dissolution ability, supporting tendency with better surface area of the ionic liquid, are accountable for the catalytic applications. In view of this, the present book-chapter summarizes various types of examples in the organic synthesis that are performed by catalysis through the use of ionic liquids. Moreover, the role of the ionic liquid in catalysis with plausible reaction mechanism, justification and future outlook in the field is also discussed.
