Emerging Technologies on the Battlefield

The rapid weaponization of emerging technologies on the battlefield in the twenty-first century, like autonomous weapons, quantum computing, and advanced cyber capabilities, poses a perilous threat to global security and the existence of humanity reshaping the future of global security, transforming the nature of modern battlefields with empirical real-world ramifications and challenging traditional rules for battlefield tactics. The rise of various AI-enabled warfare, autonomous killing machines, CRISPR bioterrorism, hacking of Neural implants, collapse of robo-advisors, and militarization of outer space can further plunge the world into chaos, which can lead to more devastating and indiscriminate wars than ever before. If they are unchecked, then these technologies can shatter global stability, leaving irreversible scars on mankind. This chapter explores cutting-edge technologies, particularly the fusion of digital data processing (“bits”) and physical manipulation (“atoms”) which can destabilize societies and amplify violence. Although global governance is a challenge, technological leapfrogging is occurring outside of government oversight, outpacing regulation. Likewise, resting on the digital transformation, we are seeing major transformation in biotechnology as well. AI-driven gene editing and synthesis are nearing a transformational point that is comparable to the current preeminence of Chat GPT in AI. The social implications of this biotech revolution require much more attention. This chapter explains the increasing role of cyber warfare in destabilizing adversaries, manipulating information ecosystems and highlighting the vulnerabilities of military infrastructure to digital threats. Adversaries, including state and nonstate actors, engage in “hybrid warfare,” which is blend of traditional military tactics with cyber operations to intimidate or destabilize opponents without overt conflict. This study employs a qualitative research methodology and analyses secondary data from military reports, academic journals, and policy documents which examine how this emerging battlefield technologies enhance operational efficiency, decision-making, and battlefield automation while raising concerns over accountability, escalation risks, and the erosion of human oversight in warfare. The primary arguments put forth in this chapter contend that advanced technology is reshaping both warfare in the twenty-first century and the global security system through AI-enabled algorithmic warfare, autonomous lethality, and cyberphysical battlespaces. Major states are developing and applying techno-military superiority, while minor or nonstate actors are searching for hybrid and asymmetric disruption, most easily realized through cyber and drone warfare. Augmented war fighters and centaur warfare are different from the traditional models of warfare, in that they are integrating human cognition and experience with AI accuracy and precision in warfare. The militarization of space and dominance in the orbital space raise new threats and challenges that demands international treaties. Ethical and legal considerations include the difficulties involved in the regulation of autonomous weapons and compliance with international law. In addition to geopolitical rivalries and strategic ambiguity, challenges related to lack of broader regulatory frameworks exacerbate the threats from an unregulated technological arms race. This chapter critically analyses the significant effects of new technologies on contemporary warfare and framework of international security, analyzing their strategic implications, ethical dilemmas, and quandaries of policy. This chapter advocates for a balanced approach to militarization of technologies, which emphasize the need for global cooperation, regulatory mechanisms, and AI responsibility.
