Security Reimagined: Balancing Militarization and Human Development in the Twenty-First Century

An analysis of the SIPRI’s (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) 2024 report indicates a sharp divergence in global priorities: military spending reached an all-time high of US$2.44 trillion, while a sizable portion of the global population continues to face gender-based violence, hunger, child malnutrition, and widening socioeconomic gaps. This emphasizes the prioritizing of resources for human-welfare indicators over military spending. It highlights the widening gap between the traditional state-centric conception and the reality that human lives are in danger every day. The study critically analyzes the paradoxes between increasing investments in hard power and the parallel deterioration of human security indicators, drawing on empirical evidence from the ongoing humanitarian crises in major regions of the world. The study argues that the militarized model of global security is unable to handle the intricate, interrelated dangers of the twenty-first century and advocates for a major change in the paradigm.
