The Intersection of Resilience and Peace

The scale, speed, and complexity of climate risks facing communities become acute in nature, mainly in conflict-affected and climate-vulnerable communities in the Global South. They are vulnerable because of the low level of development caused by the limited availability of financial and technical resources. The low level of development is associated with socioeconomic challenges such as equity issues and social disparities that disrupt the existing peace, which, in turn, affect the well-being of people. Maintaining peace necessitates building climate resilience that requires integrating strategies addressing environmental sustainability and conflict resolution. It demands adapting to the impacts of climate change while fostering peaceful societies, particularly in regions vulnerable to environmental and social challenges. Consequently, a climate-resilient peace requires a climate-sensitive approach in designing policies, lifestyles, and collective action to build a well-being framework for people in the Global South. Against this backdrop, this chapter intends to examine the intersection of resilience and peace in the context of climate change in the Global South, to understand how a climate-sensitive framework can promote collective well-being in the Global South, and to identify best practices and lessons learned from case studies of climate-resilient peacebuilding initiatives. This qualitative study uses thematic analysis to examine academic and gray data collected from the internet databases and documents released by regional and international institutions. This study uses three conceptual frameworks: resilience, peacebuilding, and the collective well-being to understand the intersection of resilience and peace in the changing climate in the Global South.
