Conflict Resolution: Approaches, Actors, and Contemporary Challenges

  • Rubina Pradhan

摘要

As the global conflicts become more complex and protracted, conflict resolution continues to act as the foundation for international peace and security. Through a varied framework that integrates both classical and contemporary approaches, this study seeks to explore the theoretical, institutional, and pragmatic dimensions of conflict resolution, also, highlighting contemporary challenges. Some of the theoretical perspectives that it focuses on are realism, liberalism, constructivism, and critical theories. These theories stress on how they view conflict, peace and resolution mechanisms. Discussions on various mechanisms of conflict resolution like negotiation, mediation, peacekeeping, and post-conflict peacebuilding are carried out to understand the complexities of conflict. It also explores the evolving practices in conflict resolution mechanisms such as transitional justice and the reconciliation process. A section is also dedicated to identify and analyze the range of actors who engage in peace processes. These actors include multilateral institutions led by a state like the United Nations, and African Union, to the non-state actors which includes non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and grassroot organizations that act as peacemakers and peacebuilders. The primary question that the study seeks to address is the customary peace efforts. This is done because the concept of conflict resolution is complicated by emerging challenges such as cyber and AI warfare, gender-based insecurity, climate-induced conflicts, and the decline of multilateralism. The chapter concludes by arguing conflict resolution should be understood in a way that is more inclusive, adaptive, and intersectional. Sustainable peacebuilding requires specific solutions based on context along with the empowerment of the local actors. The analysis made through the chapter aims to help the scholarship on conflict resolution understand the changing dimension of conflict and peace operations in contemporary times.
