In the last few decades, Uttar Pradesh has observed a notable rise in food production in agriculture. This was probable due to extensive fertilizer use, better varieties and more water resource utilization. This increased water resource need has led to extensive use of groundwater and surface water in Western Uttar Pradesh. Therefore, a quantitative groundwater assessment was carried out in the western Uttar Pradesh for the sustainable utilization of vulnerable groundwater resource. Ground Water Estimation Committee, 2015 (GEC-2015) methodology used for calculating the water budgeting and groundwater utilization. Of the twenty-four blocks of the study area, seven blocks of the critical category and two blocks of the semi-critical category was converted into over-exploited category; two blocks of the semi-critical category were converted into the critical category, whereas three blocks of the safe category were converted into the semi-critical category of the groundwater utilization development stage. Changing crop patterns, production of more high-water demanding crops, growing need for domestic and industrial use, resulting in over-exploitation of groundwater, could be the likely reasons for transformation of study region blocks from lower to higher groundwater utilization development stage.
