A Review: Circular Economy Practices in Thermal Spray Coating Applications

A circular economy (CE) forms the most crucial strategy that focuses on minimizing waste in the industry, optimizing resource consumption, and recovering materials from waste. The TSC technologies include plasma spraying, high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying, cold spraying, and flame spraying. All these TSC technologies have gained relevance because they are capable of assisting in CE principles that lead to longer component service life, reduction of wastes, and recovery of used materials. This review discusses the application of TSC technologies in enhancing material regeneration, minimizing waste, optimizing energy consumption, and recycling exhausted components. Challenges such as material degradation during recycling, the high cost of recovery devices, and process scalability are discussed, with concrete examples and data illustrating their real-world impact. Additionally, a comparative analysis of various TSC methods is presented, focusing on their energy efficiency, waste generation, and recycling potential. The importance of regulatory frameworks and energy recovery systems in advancing CE in TSC applications is also noted. This review highlights the importance of these practices toward reducing environmental impact and enhancing industrial sustainability.
