An Overview of Materials, Parameters, and Applications in Gas Dynamic Cold Spraying

Gas dynamic cold spraying (cold spraying) has demonstrated significant potential across various industries, particularly in the energy, military, and aerospace sectors. Its widespread applicability is due to its ability to achieve high deposition rates, minimize oxidation, improve corrosion resistance, and produce coatings with exceptional strength and hardness. This research article offers a comprehensive analysis of cold spray techniques, coating materials, bonding mechanisms, and recent advancements in modern applications. It highlights the diverse uses of cold spraying in areas such as energy, nuclear power plants, 3D printing, biomedical engineering, wear and tear repair, dimensional restoration, antimicrobial coatings, electrical components, catalysis, and corrosion protection. Additionally, the article examines the current state of coating materials, focusing on both high melting point metals and alloys (e.g., nickel, titanium, iron, stainless steel) and low melting point metals and alloys (e.g., tin, aluminum, zinc, copper). A concise comparison between gas dynamic cold spraying and traditional thermal spray coatings is also provided, offering valuable insights for future research and development in the field.
