Violated Constraints

摘要

In optimization of engineering systems and processes, constraints play a crucial role in defining feasible regions for decision variables. However, in many real-world applications, constraints may be violated either unintentionally due to poor modeling or intentionally through relaxation techniques to explore near-feasible or infeasible solutions that may offer practical value. This report provides an in-depth exploration of the concept of violated constraints in the context of optimization. It categorizes types of constraint violations, analyzes their implications in various domains, and examines techniques to handle violations including penalty methods, repair strategies, feasibility rules, and multiobjective trade-offs. Real-world examples from thermal systems, mechanical design, supply chain optimization, and control systems are presented to illustrate how violated constraints are encountered, interpreted, and resolved. The chapter concludes with best practices for managing constraint violations and ensuring robust, reliable optimization outcomes.
