This chapter unpacks the term ‘social’ and attempts to identify its original form as distinct from various artificial constructs that emerged after the original was significantly disintegrated by neoliberal style economic activity around the world. The extant literature on social sustainability does not sufficiently identify this difference and often ends up considering the artificial forms of social as the default. Therefore, this chapter attempts to contrast the original from the artificial, as in the absence of such clarity, the term ‘socioeconomic sustainability’ becomes oxymoronic. The chapter also briefly reviews some literature on social capital at the end.
