The COVID-19 pandemic, arising from the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, presented an unprecedented global challenge. While it brought about substantial disruptions in health, society, and the economy, it also witnessed an extraordinary achievement in the realm of diagnostics. Diagnostics emerged as a critical pillar in the pandemic response, serving as the linchpin for identifying cases, monitoring virus spread, tracking mutations, and facilitating efficient vaccine distribution. In March 2020, India had merely 14 approved laboratories for conducting RT-PCR tests for COVID-19. Today, that number has soared to over 3,000 labs, encompassing both public and private sectors. With a staggering 931 million tests conducted until June 2023, India’s diagnostic journey during the pandemic stands out as one of the world’s most remarkable success stories. The diagnostic sector witnessed a profound transformation and numerous innovations during the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic escalated, various diagnostic entities began domesticating the development of diagnostic solutions in India, significantly contributing to making clinical decisions easier and aiding patients during the crisis.
