Over the past five years, the medical device market in India has seen significant developments, with both imports and exports playing a crucial role in shaping its growth. The value of medical devices brought into India steadily increased from INR 40,690.00 crores in 2018–19 to INR 60,554.70 crores in 2022–23, translating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.45%. However, in the most recent years, there was a steady decline of −3.95% compared to the previous year, indicating the slowdown in the import sector. In March 2020, when India was at the brink of the COVID-19 pandemic, plans and strategieswere prepared for the rapid production of scientific medical supplies. As an organization dedicated to advancing medical technology and manufacturing in India, the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) recognized the gravity of the situation and swiftly identified the immediate priorities. Ventilators, personal protective equipment (PPE), N95 masks, infrared non-touch thermometers, Bi-PAP and C-PAP devices, multi-parameter physiological monitors, and RT-PCR kits for expanding testing capabilities were among the crucial medical products that needed to be urgently produced and made available in large quantities. The existing situation in India was alarming; the country had no domestic production of ventilators, and a meager production capacity of less than 10,000 RT-PCR kits per day, exclusively for tuberculosis testing. Additionally, the daily production of PPE kits was less than 25,000, which was grossly inadequate given the projected demand. The challenge was daunting, but AMTZ was determined to rise to the occasion and recognized that scaling up the production of these essential medical products was paramount to meet the growing demands of the healthcare system. The goal was to bridge the wide gap between the existing production capacity and the estimated demand.
