Understanding the Virus: The Evolving Mutations

In the recent past, the world witnessed the harrowing pandemic of SARS-CoV-2. Being the second most populous country, the effective strategy taken by the Indian government to fight back is truly praiseworthy. As we emerge out victorious, it is time to look back and understand how we won the battle, which was fought bitterly and with substantial casualties. It is particularly important to understand how 1.4 billion people of India, with health and other resources expected to stretch thin, could counter the challenge successfully. The underlying strategic policies, the scientific initiatives, and the huge response which fueled this success should be assimilated thoroughly as these will help us in future outbreaks. SARS-CoV-2, is a single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus that belongs to the family Coronaviridae. The virion particle has a spherical or pleomorphic The single-stranded RNA genome of SARS-CoV-2 contains all the genetic information necessary for the virus to replicate and produce its proteins. The genome is about 30,000 nucleotides long and encodes various structural and non-structural proteins. The genome has untranslated regions (UTRs) at 5’- and 3’ends which has a key role in viral RNA replication and translation. The genome contains several open reading frames (ORFs) that are translated into several structural as well as non-structural proteins. SARS-CoV-2, like all RNA viruses, undergoes mutations over time. Some mutations can lead to changes in the virus’s behaviour, including increased transmissibility, altered disease severity, or potential resistance to immunity from prior infections or vaccines. These variants of concern receive special attention due to their potential impact on public health. To monitor and understand the mutation frequency and its implications, continuous genomic surveillance efforts were crucial. Scientists and public health organizations around the world were actively sequencing viral genomes to track the emergence of different variants, which helps formulating public health strategies and vaccine development.
