COVID 19: The Global Response and Our Learnings: Lessons from the Pandemic for Science and the Way Forward
摘要
The unprecedented challenges which were faced by all countries, including India, clearly highlighted the urgency to invest in health to maintain the economic well-being of society. COVID also showed us that rapid advances in science and technology and the better understanding of the virus and its pathogenesis helped us to use that knowledge to develop the tools to conquer the virus. The focus clearly was on investments in public health, especially primary health care and health of our workforce. The need for enhanced investments for essential commodities like oxygen, ventilators, PPEs, etc. was also critical. The Covid pandemic also exposed the lack of global solidarity and the role of geopolitics in responding to a global threat, with nationalism and shortsighted policies leading to vast inequities in the access to countermeasures across populations. It also exacerbated the existing inequalities in society, so that the most vulnerable and marginalized in every country suffered the worst consequences. Further, people with underlying co-morbidities and noncommunicable diseases developed more severe disease after infection. We also observed a new phenomenon of “infodemic”, where people were exposed to huge amounts of information that included a lot of mis- and disinformation. This confused people and contributed to vaccine hesitancy and loss of trust in authorities. The pandemic has taught us many lessons, and we need to learn them to be better prepared next time. The issue of another pandemic is not if but when it will occur. We need to take a holistic view of health management, which addresses the needs of sick persons coming to our health facilities, and also focus on the prevention of diseases and promoting health wellness—both physical and mental.
