Yet, these figures only offer a glimpse of the scale and depth of the calamity. With nationwide lockdown, large-scale job losses, and broken supply chain and logistics, the impact of the pandemic extended far beyond immediate health concerns, as it adversely affected global health goals, including maternal and child mortality, HIV and tuberculosis control programs, and overall, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As nations united to confront the pandemic challenges, it also served as a reminder of the shared vulnerability that transcends borders and the need for collective responsibility that could shape a resilient future for all. It also served as an opportunity for science-driven technology innovations to help mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for similar future occurrences. Healthcare start-ups in India found crucial support from various government agencies and key stakeholders. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) spearheaded the COVID Suraksha program and introduced a range of schemes and grants aimed at propelling advancements in diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics, and allied technologies. Concurrently, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) streamlined the approval processes for COVID-19 drugs, vaccines, and medical devices, while the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) issued telemedicine practice guidelines, empowering registered medical practitioners to extend remote consultations via technology platforms. This in turn opened up new avenues for start-ups to build solutions and platforms.
