Hester Biosciences Limited is one of India’s leading poultry and animal vaccine manufacturing company, since 1997. Hester operates in two broad product segments: In 2020, the world plunged into an unprecedented global crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many institutes, worldwide, embarked on a mission to develop the vaccine against Covid-19 to immunize and protect mankind. Two Indian companies were granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the Government of India to manufacture the Covid-19 vaccine to help the government to achieve its objective to vaccinate and immunize the entire eligible population in India and be a supplier of the said vaccine to the world. To meet the target and to augment the capacity of existing manufacturers, the Government invited the public and the private sector to come forward and help increase the manufacture and supply of vaccines. To achieve this target, Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) & Hester formed a consortium in the name of Gujarat Covid 19 vaccine Consortium (GCVC) to manufacture the Drug Substance for Covid-19 vaccine. GCVC then entered into a licensing agreement with Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) to manufacture the Drug Substance for Covaxin at Hester through a Greenfield project. Hester constructed a multipurpose BSL-III laboratory to manufacture the Covaxin Drug Substance.
