An Agile Inflatable-Structure Airship for Air Freight: The iRPAS Project
摘要
Amidst growing ecological and economic challenges in cargo transport, the iRPAS project offers a pioneering solution with its electric, autonomous airships. The project is founded upon the convergence of aerospace engineering, airbeam structures, and remote control, aimed at implementing the design and construction of an inflatable but rigid, remotely piloted airship specifically designed for cargo applications. The future cargo transport through airships can provide an innovative solution to address logistical challenges that may appear in different scenarios. Therefore, iRPAS is providing an efficient and versatile air transport alternative. The non-rigid nature of the airship confers several advantages in terms of flexibility and adaptability to different environments, greatly facilitating its transportation and storage. Within the paper, we review the key technological innovations of the proposed airship and the identified market niches that would provide economic viability to the whole concept. Furthermore, a brief description of the design characteristics of the proposed airship are also included.
