In 1985, at the age of 23, David Foster Wallace submitted the manuscripts of a fictional work as his graduating thesis, with which he graduated summa cum laude in English at Amherst College. Two years later, this work was published under the name The Broom of the System by Penguin Books. Even though Wallace found its popularity mystifying and admitted that “there’s a lot of stuff in that novel I’d like to reel back in and do better”.
