Regulatory and Policy Frameworks

In order to address issues like pollution, carbon sequestration, and resource recovery, innovative technologies such as algal bioengineering and microbial synergy use the natural and modified capacities of algae and microbial communities for sustainable environmental remediation. Strong legislative and policy frameworks are necessary for these novel approaches in order to regulate environmental effects, assure biosafety, and strike a balance between creativity and morality. By contrasting regional frameworks in the US, EU, Asia–Pacific, and developing countries, this chapter examines the global regulatory environment and draws attention to any gaps or inconsistencies that may have an impact on the adoption of new technologies. International accords like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety are examined as avenues for international cooperation and harmonization. Public distrust, policy gaps, fragmented laws, and a lack of regulatory infrastructure in areas with low resources are some of the main obstacles. In order to fully realize the potential of algal bioengineering and microbial synergy in promoting environmental restoration and climate resilience, the chapter highlights the necessity of policies that are inclusive, flexible, and sustainability-focused in addition to sophisticated monitoring instruments and capacity-building programs.
