Isolarii belong to the genre of scientific travelogues, and describe the islands and parts of the water area through texts and images. At the beginning of the early modern period, Venice emerged as the primary hub for the production of Isolarii, and due to its extensive possessions in the Adriatic-Ionian-Aegean archipelago (Stato da Mar), they hold significant value as a source of knowledge about the Adriatic basin, particularly its insular part. The accuracy of their maps or tables in the sixteenth century depended on several factors: the level of the previous geographical knowledge, heritage from the classical period, the medium of presentation, and the way of presenting their content. Due to the lack of information, many authors have resorted to the works of their predecessors in their works, building them up with new knowledge but at the same time spreading some inaccurate established stereotypes. In addition to these factors, there were numerous instances where authors deliberately compromised the accuracy of their presentation, primarily for pragmatic reasons. This resulted in the creation of a new and distinct geographical reality, which in turn influenced the perception of the Adriatic area at that time.
