The deployment of technological innovation is crucial to the realization of economic growth and development. However, in today’s market-based globally competitive environment, industrial clusters' firms in developing economies face stiff competition and increasing demands for high quality products and services. These demands are characterized by fast response times, reliable deliveries and innovative product functionalities. Despite the rapid pace of infrastructural development globally in recent years especially in the industrial sectors, the opportunities and challenges associated with industrial clusters in developing countries have grown increasingly complex overtime. As a result, the next frontier lies in understanding how technological changes and innovations impact industrial clusters, infrastructural development and overall competitiveness. The study examined the extent of infrastructure development in the deployment of Internet-based technological innovations in the industrial clusters. The results reveal that the most common infrastructure development activities among the industrial clusters’ firms entail the acquisition of networking equipment and technological infrastructure. However, the leasing or rentals of equipment, as well as external linkages, were among the least common activities carried out by the firms. Additionally, it was observed that there was a low level of investment and expenditure on infrastructure development by the industrial clusters’ firms. Thus, the study suggests the need to strengthen infrastructural development, as well as industrialization and sustainable development of the industrial clusters, as this would increase and sustain firms’ performance, boost productivity and competitiveness, contribute to economic growth and ultimately generate employment opportunities. Similarly, the right investment in Internet network infrastructure can bring down consumer prices and improve affordability. Therefore, the availability of infrastructural and institutional support could play a critical role in the development of industrial clusters, while innovation and infrastructure development are crucial in creating a competitive advantage for firms within industrial clusters.

摘要
