One of the major constraints in the shrimp culture system is diseases and parasites affecting the stock and responsible for huge economic loss. Of the infectious diseases of shrimp, viral and bacterial infections have been found to be a serious problem and responsible for severe economic loss in the shrimp culture industry worldwide. Various strategies are being followed to prevent or control the diseases in shrimp culture systems, and these strategies include good nutrition in improving aquatic animal health and the use of efficient vaccines, immunostimulants, non-specific immune-enhancers and probiotics. Most of the research has been concentrated on the development of vaccines against Vibrio and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). The research carried out so far has resulted in the development of different types of vaccines, such as inactivated vaccines, recombinant vaccines and DNA vaccines against Vibrio and WSSV. This paper summarizes the status of different vaccines developed against viral and bacterial pathogens of shrimp.
