Artificial Intelligence has the potential to revolutionize exploration and production techniques in the oil and gas industry by encompassing the analysis of satellite imagery, seismic data, well logs, and other geological data sets. ExxonMobil and Shell have demonstrated the wider use of artificial intelligence in this sector by benefiting from its ability to analyze enormous datasets more quickly, getting more accurate information, forecasting, and predicting scenarios, as well as customizing individualized public services. The application of this technology, however, faces several challenges, including a dearth of transparencyTransparency, unanticipated and unforeseen repercussions, mysterious decision-making, and governance. Artificial Intelligence also has significant ramifications for society, law, ethics, and organizations, as many organizations and service providers face difficulty in using artificial intelligence governance to bridge the ethical divide in technology development. Thus, this study underscores the need to build regulatory guidelines, procedures, plans, governance processes, structures, and resources for ensuring the moral and responsible advancement of artificial intelligence. It provides its analysis by investigating the successful application of artificial intelligence governance in the oil and gas industry in the context of Oman. Using quantitative research methods, a random sampling technique was used to collect 102 valid samples from the surveyed oil and gas companies operating in Oman. The results confirm that artificial intelligence is an emerging area in the oil and gas sector, with only 36% of the companies surveyed using or started using this technology. The findings reveal that most of these companies specialize in up-stream operation and use artificial intelligence in predictive maintenance and machinery inspection, material movement, field services, and quality control. They also show positive sentiments towards various artificial intelligence governance modules and establishing a committee to control its responsible use. The study concludes with practical and policy implications for the implementation and governance of this emerging technology.
