Scientific information has grown to be very large and detailed. Thousands of organisms have had their whole genome sequence determined, and there are enormous amounts of related data describing gene and protein regulation, predicted and experimentally determined protein structure, protein-protein interactions, gene and protein function, and the relationship of genes/proteins to disease (to mention only a few). Finding information relevant to a specific gene/protein or process can be a long and tedious process. Fortunately, many of the most important repositories are cross-linked to each other—but the sheer volume of information can make finding what you are looking for difficult. In this chapter, we will use colistin as an example and look at a few useful resources to find information about colistin, its mechanism of action, and mechanisms of resistance. Students can follow similar approaches to find information about their antibiotic of interest (aoi).
