Navigating the Digital Shift: An Analysis of the Psychological Impact of AI Adoption on Lecturers’ Job Security in Zimbabwe
摘要
The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has sparked intense debate about its potential impact on various professions, including education. In Africa, where education is critical for economic development and social mobility, concerns about AI's effect on teacher job security are particularly high. This qualitative study explores the benefits and challenges of AI adoption, and its impact on lecturers’ job security in Zimbabwe. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing a purposive sampling technique to select 30 lecturers from various disciplines in a Zimbabwean university. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data, which were then analyzed using a mixed methods approach, combining thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that lecturers are resilient and adaptable to the revolving technological landscape, and can balance the benefits and challenges of AI adoption. Significant implementation challenges include limited training and support, and students’ overreliance on AI. The study concludes that, despite adoption challenges, AI implementation has a positive impact on lecturers’ job security, enabling a focus on high-touch, high-value tasks that require human skills. Recommended is that universities should prioritize the provision of comprehensive AI training and support to lecturers, and take steps to mitigate the potential risks of student dependency on AI.
