The Rohingya in Pakistan: The Complexity and Dynamics of Refugee Life in Karachi
摘要
Currently, Karachi is home to some 400,000 Rohingya Muslims. The Rohingya migration to Pakistan can be traced back to the complex history of British Burma, ethnic conflicts in Burma’s post-independence period, the military takeover in 1962, atrocities and violence against the Rohingya Muslims, and, finally, the 1982 citizenship law, which stripped the Rohingyas of Myanmar citizenship. The continued repression, rape, and genocide led to the 2017 crisis, which triggered the mass exodus of Rohingyas to Bangladesh and to other countries in the region, including Pakistan. Using both secondary and primary sources and interviews of Rohingya refugees in Karachi, this chapter examines the development of the crisis historically, the development of Rohingya settlements in Karachi, and the experiences of the refugees and their lives, livelihoods, and future.
