Introduction: Understanding the Rohingya Crisis

This has been a complex book to write and edit. The subject itself is entangled and morally charged. On one side of the Naf River they call themselves Rohingjjaa, with a soft “g,” and on the other side it is Rohinga, with a hard “g.” “Rohingya” is an enclosing term, just as the words “Kachin” and “Karen” have become enclosing terms in other parts of Myanmar, bringing into one named category peoples of different kinds and with different experiences, dialects, and tones.
