In this chapter, we examine how health and community care professionals identify and respond to experiences of loneliness among people living with chronic illness. Our research shows that loneliness often remains unspoken in healthcare encounters, with health professionals relying on indirect cues rather than open discussion due to stigma and discomfort with the topic. Professionals used various strategies to support their lonely patients, such as referring to support groups or nurturing the therapeutic relationship. However, they reported feeling constrained by time limitations, inadequate training and healthcare systems designed around medical rather than social needs. These findings highlight the tension between professionals’ recognition of loneliness as significant, and their limited capacity to address what is fundamentally a social issue within medically focused healthcare settings.

摘要
