Chapter One provides an overview of loneliness, its complexities, and its impact in the lives of people living with chronic illness. After exploring the different approaches—psychological, sociological, and medical—to loneliness, we examine arguments that loneliness is socially structured, and characteristic of modern, neoliberal societies. The individualistic focus of solutions for people with chronic conditions is critiqued, followed by investigation of the healthcare policy landscape and proposed interventions to alleviate loneliness. The chapter concludes with a description of the study methodology and an outline of subsequent chapters.
