Monitoring of Prefabricated Vertical Drain Performance for Ground Improvement in Deep Clay Layer

Ground improvement works in deeper clayey soil strata require careful planning, engineering expertise, and specialized techniques to ensure the stability, safety, and permanence of civil engineering projects in challenging soil conditions. The case study related to marine soft clayey strata in India, in which city of Cochin and state of Kerala region. Preloading with Vertical Drains (PVD) is indeed a popular ground improvement technique, particularly for major civil engineering projects, especially in areas with deep clayey soil deposits. Selecting the proper method to accurately predict the final future settlements of soil improved by Preloading with Vertical Drains (PVD) is indeed a meticulous and crucial activity in geotechnical engineering. It is well-known that Asaoka or hyperbolic methods are widely used in practical applications to assess final settlement and the degree of consolidation during preloading. This study highlights, field studies performed to predict the final settlement of soil after improvement. In field first settlement are predicted based on Asaoka or hyperbolic method. It is also monitored by performing CPT and SPT tests before and after application of ground improvement technique. Based on observed results, it can conclude that Asaoka or hyperbolic methods can predict rational settlement.
