Stabilization of Subgrade Soil Using Geotextiles

The present study investigates the effects of the inclusion of geotextile reinforcement layers in the subgrade soil on its overall behaviour, which is determined in terms of enhancement in the California Bearing Ratio (CBR). All the experimental tests were conducted following Indian standards. The study assesses the effect of the type of geotextile reinforcing layers and their number and position in the reinforced subgrade. All the tests were performed on silty soil with low compressibility reinforced with single, two or three layers of woven and nonwoven geotextile sheets of different diameters. The results indicate that the inclusion of geotextile reinforcing elements significantly increases the CBR values of the composite subgrade, especially under soaked conditions. The maximum improvement was observed for two geotextile reinforcement layers compared to the same with single and triple layers. Increasing the diameter of reinforcement also increases the effectiveness and enhances the CBR of soil samples. The findings recommend that geotextile materials have considerable potential for enhancing pavement characteristics.
