The difficulties in stabilizing a geo-structure arise mainly due to low/inadequate shearing strength which can cause failure, either in terms of catastrophe or serviceability (in the form of deformations). The problem can be addressed through different ground improvement techniques including the applications of reinforcement. Compared to other methods (such as physical, chemical, and hydraulic treatments) the inclusions in terms of synthetic reinforcements, such as geotextiles, geogrids, and geocells, are proven to be better in improving the engineering properties of soils. Though the synthetic materials are apparently environment friendly, however, being a petroleum by-product, their life cycle is objectionable in micro and/or macro levels. In comparison, the natural fibres (jute, coir, sisal, palm, bamboo, etc.) have the potential to be equally beneficial for reinforcing the soil. In this context, the capacity of jute has already been proven, as the discrete fibre and textile forms, in improving the inadequacy of the soil as mentioned earlier. Similar to other natural fibres, the bio-degradability may seem to be an issue, however, it has also been revealed that treatment can lengthen its life span. Besides the technically favourable aspects, being an agricultural product, the use of jute would also improve the socio-economy of rural areas. Considering the above, in this article, a critical analysis is made of jute as the medium for the soil reinforcement.
